Hands On

Hard copy versions can be ordered from Glasgow Museums (please see bottom of page for ordering details).

Hands On is a step by step guide to using object-based learning. Aimed at those involved with the education of early years and primary school groups, the guide demonstrates how this form of learning can be carried out using everyday or museum objects.

The guide points out that working with real objects and paintings, for example in a museum or gallery, sparks the imagination, helping children develop their powers of observation and interpret the world around them.

Hands On contains:

Links throughout between object-based learning activities and the Curriculum for Excellence.

Simple Q&A frameworks for exploring objects and paintings, both in the classroom and in a museum or gallery setting.

Activities to act as a guide for object-based learning sessions.

More ideas to carry on from the activities, including those with a historical & cultural theme.

Glossary of terms to help when working with paintings in particular.

Help for visiting museums and galleries, including tips for your day and useful contacts.

Hands On has been produced by the Scottish Museums Council in partnership with Glasgow Museums.

The guide has been produced in electronic format - ideal for use in the classroom with an overhead projector or electronic whiteboard.
